Financial support

As part of their commitments to foster diversity and inclusion and to support early-career members of the ISMIR community, the ISMIR Society, Women in MIR, and the local organizers will offer several financial support opportunities for those who wish to attend ISMIR 2019, but who may need extra support in order to be able to do this.

A major part of our capacity to hand out grants will be enabled through the generous support of industry partners, whom we thank in advance for supporting our community.

Forms of Support

Eligible parties (see below) may apply for any or all of the following forms of support:

  • Registration waivers for tutorials and scientific program (main conference);

  • Lodging in shared (2-person) hotel room accommodation.

Grant categories

This year, we will have three grant categories, as listed below.

Student Author Grant

Student Author Grants are available for first or supporting authors of an accepted full paper in the ISMIR main conference, who were students at the time of paper submission.

Timeline and procedure
Candidates for Student Author Grants should apply by June 28, 2019 (AoE time) through this form. Grant notifications will be sent out no later than August 1, 2019.
Awards are granted based on the quality of the accepted submission, the degree of financial need, the applicant’s newness to ISMIR, and the applicant’s geographical diversity.

For questions about the Student Author Grant, please e-mail ismir2019-grants@ismir.net with y.ren@uu.nl in the cc.

Women in MIR (WiMIR) Grants

WiMIR Grants are enabled by dedicated generous support of our industry partners, and will be available to women, trans, or non-binary:

  • first or supporting authors of accepted full papers in the ISMIR main conference;

  • first authors of proposed late-breaking/demo contributions, submissions to the DLfM conference on November 9 and participants to the WiMIR workshop on November 3. An initial proof of the proposition/submission/participation should be demonstrated by August 8 August 15, as part of the application.

Applicants do NOT need to be students to apply for the WiMIR Award.

Timeline and procedure
Candidates for WiMIR Grants should apply by August 8, 2019 August 15, 2019 (AoE time) through this form. Grant notifications will be sent out no later than August 15 August 22, 2019.
Awards are granted based on the quality of the accepted submission or proposition, the degree of financial need, the applicant’s newness to ISMIR, and the applicant’s geographical diversity.

For questions about the WiMIR Grant, please e-mail ismir2019-grants@ismir.net.

Community Grants

Finally, the local organization wishes to support several individuals who would like to attend ISMIR, but who are not in the capacity to actively participate to the conference. For example, this may include:

  • former ISMIR members, who would like to re-engage with the community, but cannot trivially be supported for this given their current roles;

  • students and researchers with concrete potential to become a part of the ISMIR community in the future, but who currently are not in a sufficiently supportive context to act on this yet (e.g. because their institutes do not have clear MIR expertise, or they affiliate to neighboring disciplines, that do not have conference-oriented publishing cultures).

As part of the application, candidates will need to upload a motivation letter. Accompanying recommendation letters by ISMIR community members are strongly encouraged.

The Community Grant is explicitly not bound to (academic) age or gender. However, please be aware that only a very limited amount of community grants may be awarded, depending on sponsoring capacity.

Timeline and procedure
Candidates for Community Grants should apply by August 8, 2019 August 15, 2019 (AoE time) through this form. Grant notifications will be sent out no later than August 15 August 22, 2019.
Awards are granted based on the applicant’s indicated motivation to (re-)engage with the ISMIR community, the motivations put forward by ISMIR members in recommending the applicant, the level of concrete potential for future engagement with the ISMIR community, the degree of financial need, and the applicant’s geographical diversity.

For questions about the Community Grant, please e-mail ismir2019-grants@ismir.net .

Eligibility for multiple grants

Candidates who may be eligible for multiple grant categories are welcome to apply to these all.

In their application, Student Author Grant candidates can give explicit permission for their information to also be considered for the WiMIR grant, in case they would be eligible for both.

With the Community Grant being slightly different in nature (requiring a motivation letter, with possible accompaniment of a recommendation), candidates interested in applying for this grant should always complete the corresponding application procedure.
